Two new amaryllidaceae alkaloids from the bulbs of Lycoris radiata.

Two new Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, named lycoranines A (1) and B (2), were isolated from the bulbs of Lycoris radiata. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Compound 2 was a new-type alkaloid, which provided a new insight into the biosynthesis of alkaloids in Amaryllidaceae plants.

Karyotype studies on Lycoris radiata populations from China.

Lycoris radiata is an important medicinal and ornamental plant of China. In the present study, somatic chromosome counts and karyotype analyses, which are important aspects of plant phylogeny and evolution, were performed in 466 individuals from 25 L. radiata populations by root tip squash method. Chromosome counts revealed that 10 populations were diploid (2n = 2x = 22) and 15 were triploid (2...

Cloning and heterologous expression of a new 3'-hydroxylase gene from Lycoris radiata.

A full-length cDNA (LC3'H) was obtained from a cDNA library of Lycoris radiata by DOP-PCR (degenerate oligonucleotide primer PCR), 3'race and 5'race methods. Compared with the other reported enzymes from different plants, the deduced amino acid sequence of LC3'H exhibits significant homologies to 3'-hydroxylases that are involved in the caffeic acid biosynthesis. These findings suggest that the...

Acetylcholineestarase-Inhibiting Alkaloids from Lycoris radiata Delay Paralysis of Amyloid Beta-Expressing Transgenic C. elegans CL4176

The limited symptom relief and side effects of current Alzheimer's disease (AD) medications warrant urgent discovery and study of new anti-AD agents. The "cholinergic hypothesis" of AD prompts us to search for plant-derived acetylcholineesterase (AChE) inhibitors such as galanthamine that has been licensed in Europe for AD treatment. We used the unique amyloid β-expressing transgenic C. elegans...

Antiproliferative activities of Amaryllidaceae alkaloids from Lycoris radiata targeting DNA topoisomerase I

Crude Amaryllidaceae alkaloids (AAs) extracted from Lycoris radiata are reported to exhibit significant anti-cancer activity. However, the specific alkaloids responsible for the pharmacodynamic activity and their targets still remain elusive. In this context, we strived to combine affinity ultrafiltration with topoisomerase I (Top I) as a target enzyme aiming to fish out specific bioactive AAs ...
